I believe those who beg for money on the side of the road are making society less empathetic because they try not to give them money. This is a vast over-generalization, but I believe it gets the point across. It's no surprise that the human race is becoming more and more apathetic as time goes on, given the way the world is now. Media is showing more and more vulgarity, gore, and violence than before, and more people are getting exposed to this at younger and younger ages. This exposure is desensitizing us collectively and we respond less and less to this stimuli (an argument shown to me by Bobby). However, I believe that the desensitization is only to a limited extent, with the border being the killings we see in media (which we shrug off as it is not affecting us in any immediate way) to 'ignoring' the beggar on the side of the road.
